Azul, designed by Michael Kiesling, is a captivating and visually stunning board game that celebrates the art of tile placement and pattern-building. Renowned for its elegant design and straightforward yet engaging gameplay, Azul invites players to embrace the role of artisans tasked with embellishing the walls of the Portuguese royal palace of Evora with exquisite ceramic tiles.
In Azul, players compete to create elaborate and visually appealing tile patterns on their individual player boards. Using colourful tiles reminiscent of traditional Portuguese azulejos, participants strategize to carefully arrange these tiles and score points by completing specific patterns while avoiding waste.
Gameplay: At the heart of Azul is the tile-drafting mechanism. Players select tiles from factory displays filled with assortments of colourful tiles. Each round, players choose tiles from the same factory display or take all tiles of the same colour from the central market, known as the "floor."
Strategic placement of tiles on the player board is crucial. As players complete rows and columns or specific patterns, they score points. However, any excess or unused tiles placed on the floor lead to negative points, adding an element of risk and planning.
The game progresses through several rounds, and as the walls of the palace begin to fill with tiles, players must carefully manage their selections to optimize their scoring potential while disrupting their opponents' strategies.
